Sam Haga first picked up a guitar as a young teenager and played his way through high school and college. After graduating from Towson University with a B.S. in Business Administration - Entrepreneurship, he moved back home to (Portsmouth, VA) and went to work for a local music store. While working in the store Sam and his uncle, the bassist in the band “Fretomology”, took a guitar kit building class. Little did Sam know that experience would eventually lead him to establishing Haga Guitars. On his journey Sam picked up an upright bass and began playing in Norfolk funk-jazz band, Sharkophagus. During this time he also became co-owner of the production company, Electroganic. Sam now plays upright and electric bass for the Americana/Surf band Lucky 757.
Having developed a loving passion for all guitars, whether they be cheap, expensive, new, or old, dingy sounding or divine, Sam signed up to build an acoustic guitar from scratch with Virginia Beach luthier, Brian Hawkins. At Hawkins Guitar Luthier School, Sam learned more than just the steps that go into building a guitar. Brian instilled the confidence in him to use tools that he’d never used before and taught him how to overcome challenges using the critical thinking skills of a master woodworker.
After completing his first instrument, doing everything from personally selecting the tone woods all the way through the finishing process, Sam knew he was hooked and had to build more. In May of 2017, Brian told Sam he was ready to go out on his own and Haga Guitars was born.
Handcrafted with personally selected tone wood.
Haga Acoustic Guitars are built using the Hawkins Guitar Bracing System. This bracing structure is meant to spread the tension throughout the instrument effectively which creates a well balanced lively sounding guitar.
Building electric guitars and basses from select tone wood, at Haga Guitars, Sam also does his own custom finish work on all of the instruments using “Ultra-low VOC, HAPS Free, Water Based Finish.”
